Capcut also banned in USA after tiktok wrapped

Alongside TikTok, another well-known social media application, CapCut, is also going offline in the United States.

Last year, a law was enacted requiring TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest its ownership by January 19, 2025. Failure to comply would result in TikTok being pulled from the App Store. ByteDance has decided against selling the app, prompting the enforcement of this ban.

However, TikTok is not the only service affected. ByteDance also owns CapCut, a video editing platform, which halted its operations just before midnight on January 19.

The landing page for CapCut now states, “Sorry, CapCut isn’t available right now due to a new U.S. law banning its use. As a result, you cannot access CapCut at this time. We are diligently working to reinstate our service in the U.S. Please stay tuned! Meanwhile, you can still manage your account data.”

Up until this week, it was uncertain whether CapCut would fall under the same legal constraints as TikTok, as per a report from USA Today. Now, it’s evident that CapCut, like TikTok, will be inaccessible to U.S. users indefinitely.

Just days before the ban’s implementation, the Supreme Court declined to review a challenge to the law. Nevertheless, Donald Trump has expressed his intention to review the matter once he assumes office on January 20.
